WELCOME TO ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF #BOTB!
It's February, and I've got the winter blues...
LONG COLD WINTER BY CINDERELLA
Cinderella was an American rock band formed in the suburbs of Philadelphia in 1983. The band emerged in the mid-1980s with a series of multi-platinum studio albums and hit singles whose music videos received heavy MTV rotation and popularity.
Cinderella initially had a glam metal sound throughout the late 1980s before shifting into a more blues rock-based sound during the early to mid 1990s."Long Cold Winter" is the 6th track from their second studio album of the same name, released in July 1988.
VS
COLD WEATHER BLUES BY MUDDY WATERS
McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known professionally as Muddy Waters, was an American blues singer and musician who was an important figure in the post-World War II blues scene.
He is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues" and his style of playing has been described as "raining down Delta beatitude"
"Cold Weather Blues" is the 6th track from his second studio album, Folk Singer, released in January 1964.

Debbie,
ReplyDeleteTwo great picks for the winter blues. I think overall, I prefer the song LONG COLD WINTER. This style seems to suit me best at the moment, so please give my vote to Cinderella.
My BOTB is up running. It didn't publish at midnight like I wanted only because I didn't set it properly. :)
Blues for the blues! ☺ First vote goes to Cinderella. Thanks, Cathy!
DeleteI never got into the group Cinderella, but I probably have some of their CDs inherited from my brother's collection. He liked that kind of music a lot. I can't say I was really into Muddy Waters either and this particular cut is so subdued that it failed to excite my interest in any way. Give my vote to Cinderella. Maybe I need to check out my brother's CDs and see what I've been missing.
ReplyDeleteLee
Another vote for Cinderella. You should check those CDs, Lee. This band had some good material!
DeleteCinderella gets my vote. Shevreminds me of Janis Joplin. I enjoyed this a lot.
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for Cinderella! Thanks, Birgit. I'm glad you liked it, but this was an all-male band, fronted by a guy named Tom Keefer. He does sound a bit like Janis Joplin. ☺
DeleteCome on... everyone knows Muddy Waters is an automatic vote from John. Cinderella was okay until the vocals started.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised by your vote, John. ☺ First one for Muddy Waters!
DeleteNo question at all for me... not even close: Muddy Waters hands down! He (and others from his era) inspired everyone who followed.
ReplyDeleteYou have a point there, Peter. Thanks for casting a vote. Muddy Waters, it is!
DeleteThey're both good choices for the winter blues. Cinderella sounds a bit angry but Muddy Waters gets it; that broody 'let's just get through this ' mood that dissipates the very first day of spring. Muddy Waters for me, please!
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for Muddy Waters! Thanks, diedre. This is turning into a good battle. ☺
DeleteCinderella isn't normally my thing, but that song had me listening... I'd heard of Muddy, but (don't throw rocks!) had never listened. While I appreciate the opportunity afforded, I'll vote Cinderella.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you've never listened to Muddy Waters, and also that you voted for Cinderella. All good! This keeps life interesting. ☺
DeleteDEBBIE D'DOGLADY ~
ReplyDeleteFirst thing I want to say is that John's comment literally made me COL! (Chuckle-Out-Loud!) Why? Because I felt the exact same way. I was diggin' the first track until that Cinderfella opened his mouth.
OK, let's be upfront and toothful about it: That electric guitar work is as old as Winter. Nuttin' new or special about it; very derivative of countless other Blues guitarists what done did come before. But you know what? I don't care! I still dig that stuffs (even if I had to kind of tolerate those vocals). I'm reminded of the Gary Moore album 'Blues Alive', which is the best guitar-centric Blues-Rock album I've ever heard, and which I tormented my neighbors with all through 1993. (It was almost all I listened to that entire year.)
Muddy Waters... well, I love the dude! My second favorite Blues artist (after Howlin' Wolf). My sidekick (a stuffed mutt) is named Muddy Hayes; and when I worked as a cowboy entertainer (actor) at a Western town amusement park in Phoenix, I went by the pseudonym Muddy McFly. So... yeah, I loves me some Muddy!
However, in this case, there was barely even enough "song" there to call Muddy's offering a Blues song. And so even though I could have done without the screamin' vocals in 'Long Cold Winter' - to my tremendous surprise - CINDERFELLA gets my vote.
I asked Judge Al Bondigas (translation: albondigas = meatballs) which song he preferred. Well, he's not a Blues fan at all, and he said, "Boring beats bad". Translated, that means he's rulin' for MUDDY WATERS.
There you have it. As always, one vote and one rulin' which cancel each other out.
~ Stephen (bruddah o' da judge)
POSTSCRIPT: I has a hunch that I'll be cranking up to eleven Gary Moore's 'Blues Alive' album later today.
Yeah, Muddy's song was a little sparse and Cinderella's guitar riffs are old and cold. ☺ Tom Keefer DOES do a good Janis Joplin impression and I know you don't like her either. Was Muddy McFly inspired by Marty McFly (Back to the future)? So, we have one surprising vote for CinderFella, er, CinderElla, and one unenthusiastic vote for Muddy Waters. Thank you for your always interesting commentary! As it turns out, this is one of my best battles, so far. No Blowout!

DEBBIE ~
DeleteNothing beats 'Two Thumbs Up' ...well, except for a loaded pistol.
[Full disclosure: I stole the "loaded pistol" remark from an episode of 'The Partridge Family'.)
I'm listening to Gary Moore's 'Blues Alive' while I type this nonsense. Dang! That's *still* the best Blues-Rock album of all-dang-time!
Yes, your Battle -- you got a goot juan going here!
And, yes, abbalouly! The McFly part of my stage name was taken from 'Back To The Future'. (Good call!) And the Muddy part was taken from my stuffed dog, Muddy; and HE got it from Muddy Waters.
And speaking of 'Back To The Future'...
here's some fun stuffs you may like:
By 1985, when the first installment of 'Back To The Future' was released, I had already moved on to "real" jobs. But my sister, Bonehead, worked the entire shoot as Lea Thompson's stand-in. And my brother, Judge Meatball, worked as an Extra in a pivotal scene of the movie. Here's a picture of Judge Al in 'Back To The Future':

Oops! That's not Judge Al. That's "Cinderfella". Here's the Judge:

Dagnabbit! That was CinderFellaS! All three of 'em. Third time's a charm, amiright?
https://i.imgur.com/Qoyku5h.jpg
First dude on the left (the dude directly over Michael J. Fox's right shoulder), that was Judge Al in 1984 or '85.
Four years later, when they shot 'BTTF, Part II', Judge Al had also gotten a "real" job, so they had to find someone to replace his spot in that same pivotal scene. (Remember, 'Back To The Future 2' had gone back to the past... again. So the scene had to be re-shot.).
Judge Al's spot was replaced by...

They don't call it "Hollyweird" for nut'n, ya know?
~ Stephen (surprisingly sober)
That first CinderFella sketch looks a lot like Joni Mitchell. Those triplets are scary - no eyes! Judge Al sure resembled you back then. ☺ Yeah, no similarity to the guy that replaced him. Sounds like your sister had more of a showbiz career than you two, Did she get a "real" job later on as well? Don't mind me, I'm just a nosy old lady.
DeleteGOL! Those are not "triplets". It's the same woman superimposed.
DeleteAnd she *does* have eyes. Two of 'em. But they're both closed.
(However, looking at it with the thought in mind that she has "no eyes", I can actually see the way *you* saw it. Funny stuffs! It's kinda like an optical illusion thing. I never seen't it that way before!)
~ D-FensDogG
Well, I looked again, and still seems zombie-like at first glance, but then, I could also see it your way. ☺ And your first sketch - I can recognize Debbie Harry. The beret fooled me. Joni Mitchell used to wear those a lot.
DeleteDebbie -
ReplyDeleteApologies for stopping in late. I thought for sure I would be voting for Muddy Waters, but he just couldn't tear me away from my love for Cinderella.
-Mary
No problem, Mary. ☺ Thanks for your vote. Cinderella gets another one!
