YOU'RE MY WORLD #BOTB PLUS CONTEST RESULTS

WELCOME TO ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF #BOTB!

It's February, and the winter doldrums have set in! ๐Ÿ˜ซ

This battle was inspired by CW Martin's post at Tilting At Windmills,
and features erstwhile rivals in live performances.
Thanks, Chris! ๐Ÿ˜€

HISTORY

"You're My World" is a cover of an Italian ballad originally recorded in 1963 as "Il mio mondo" ("My World") by Umberto Bindi

Although the original Italian version was not a hit, even in Italy, the song came to the attention of UK record producer George Martin, who commissioned an English version to be recorded by his protรฉgรฉe Cilla Black. The English lyrics were written by Carl Sigman.
"You're My World" reached No. 1 in Britain on the chart dated May 30, 1964 and remained there for a total of four weeks, one week more than Black's preceding single "Anyone Who Had a  Heart". Although she returned to the UK Top Ten eight times, the song was her final No. 1 hit.

Helen Reddy had a U.S. top 20 hit with the same song in 1977.

Reference only. NOT eligible for voting!

On to the contest!

TOM JONES

Tom Jones (born 7 June 1940), (real name Thomas Jones Woodward) is a Welsh singer whose career has spanned five-and-a-half decades since his emergence as a vocalist in the mid-1960s, with a string of top hits, regular touring, appearances in Las Vegas (1967–2011), and career comebacks.

Jones' powerful voice has been described as a "full-throated, robust baritone". His performing range has included pop, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, soul, indie, folk, disco and gospel.

"You're My World" is the final track from his 1971 album, "She's A Lady".

VS

ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK

Arnold George Dorsey MBE (born 2 May 1936), known professionally as Engelbert Humperdinck, is a British pop singer described by AllMusic as "one of the finest "middle of the road" balladeers around. He achieved international prominence in 1967 with his recording of "Release Me".

For Valentine's Day 2017, Humperdinck recorded an exclusive acoustic performance of "You're My World" for OK! Good Records YouTube Channel.

  1. Both these guys are pretty similar except the guy with the longer name who seems like a copy of TJ is older and more seasoned in this clip than the more youthful Jones. For preference of performance I've got to vote for the Tom Jones clip.

    1. A vote for Tom to start things off. I was hoping to find clips from the same era, but no such luck.

  2. We're comparing Tom Jones at the prime of his career to Engelbert Humperdinck at 80 years old. I'm not sure that's fair to either singer. Having said that, I actually preferred Eng's unplugged performance. My vote goes to Engelbert Humperdinck.

    1. I know! I was hoping to find either a younger Engelbert or older Tom version, but no such luck. Anyway, E.H. gets the vote. Thanks!

Firsteth & Foremostest, I gotta say that I had no idea Arnold George Dorsey changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck! That is HILARIOUS!! If anything, one would think that an entertainer named Engelbert Humperdinck might take the stage name A.G. Dorsey, or something like that. Now I need to find out HOW COME THAT? WHY would a Dorsey become a Humperdinck?

Alright, onto the Battle at hand...

My Ma always dug Tom Jones (we ought not mention that name around Pa), and I always liked him some, too. Tom's version of 'You're My World' was surely a wee bit o' overwrought, but I still preferred it to Humperdinck's ultra-subdued, low-energy rendition (Zzzzzz...) Sheesh! Couldn't he have at least gotten his "hump" off the chair long enough to sing the song? Who did he think he was, Perry Como?!

    Me: vote for Mr. Jones
Judge Al: rulin' for Mr. Jones

    1. You're right - that stage name is pretty funny. ☺ Mind you, the real Engelbert Humperdinck was a classical composer: WIKI LINK Fun fact: In their heyday, Tom and EH were engaged in a feud every bit as big as Beatles vs Stones. Fun video! I'll post it here so others can see it. And thanks to you and Al for your votes. That's two for Tom.

  4. I vote for Tom, is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me, Jones because I like his voice more than Engelbert

  6. Dare I say it's Tom Jones for me as well? The song is not familiar, but both the singers are. I'm not surprised that they were feuding ;-) Happy Valentine's Day, Mr. Humperdinck. A belated Happy Birthday to you, dear Debbie!

  7. I don't remember this song. I know both artists. I enjoyed both covers but I preferred Tom Jones. I just love his vocals and that's why he gets my vote!

    1. Thanks, Cathy! This was a very one-sided battle and Tom is the clear victor.

  8. VOTE = TOM JONES

Just a much stronger performance. Of course, I always preferred Tom Jones over Engelbert, so...

  10. Thanks everyone who voted in this battle. ๐ŸŒน It was a serious blowout, with Tom getting all the votes (including mine), except 1. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Thanks for breaking the shutout, John! Unfortunately, I could only find recordings where the contestants were far apart in age, and that surely didn't help.

These battles haven't gone too well for me, so I'm going to take break from them for a while, to regroup. I'll still vote on yours when I can. In the meantime, you'll find me at The Doglady's Den Come on by for a visit! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ thedogladysden.com

Congratulations to Tom Jones! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Here's my favourite song of his:

    1. Thank you for those kind words, Ed! ♥ Right now, it's about time constraints. My main website is thriving, and I'm having trouble keeping up with everything. Something had to give!

    Definitely what Ed sed.

I think you should make a comeback on March 1st. ;^) After all, March *IS* the month in which Spring springs us back to life. And I have a Battle suggestion for you, considering the word "Spring" an' all. I'd bet my favorite Barbie doll that this would be a terrific Battle which would reset your BOTB instinct:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JsDhQokmdU
    Versus
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpOpVuIJv-k

That match-up is on my old (2013) handwritten 'To BOTB Someday' list. But considering my BOTB's Battle Of The Booze series, it'd be a long time before I ever got to it. (I'm sure the world will end first.) Why do I think that will be a really competitive contest? Because I honestly have no idea who would win and, for whatever reason, I have a fairly impressive record when it comes to accurately predicting my winners & losers. This particular match-up really feels like a toss-up to me.

    1. HI Stephen, I'm sorry, but with my main website thriving, I'm finding it difficult to fit in BOTB posts at this time. I'll try to keep up with what others are posting, but don't hold me to it all the time.

  14. You picked two fabulous artists in your battle. At first I thought the age of each singer would create an unfair disadvantage for Englebert but it turns out in this case it worked in his favor. I always enjoy Tom Jones. He's a powerhouse vocalist with real heart but there's magic in Englebert's rendition. I felt his words. I thought, this is a man who really understands the lyrics "You're My World" and perhaps even feels like this for his someone special. Please give my vote to Mr. Humperdinck.
