SUNNY AFTERNOON #BOTB

WELCOME TO ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF #BOTB!

It's June - the start of my favourite season!

This battle features a duel between an iconic American artist,
and a defunct Spanish band, performing a Kinks hit from way back.

HISTORY

'Sunny Afternoon' is a song by British band, the Kinks, written by frontman Ray Davies. The track later featured on the Face to Face album as well as being the title track for their 1967 compilation album.

Like its contemporary, "Taxman" by the Beatles, the song references the high levels of progressive tax taken by the British Labour government, although it does so through the lens of an unsympathetic aristocrat bemoaning the loss of his vast unearned wealth.

Its strong music hall flavour and lyrical focus was part of a stylistic departure for the band (begun with 1965's "A Well Respected Man"), which had risen to fame in 1964–65 with a series of hard-driving, power-chord rock hits.

Released as a single on June 3, 1966, "Sunny Afternoon" went to number one on the UK Singles Chart, remaining there for two weeks. In America, it peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in early autumn.

On to the contest!

JIMMY BUFFETT

James William Buffett (December 25, 1946 – September 1, 2023) was an American singer-songwriter. He was known for his tropical rock sound and persona, which often portrayed a lifestyle described as "island escapism", promoting enjoyment of life and following passions.
Of the over 30 albums recorded by Buffett, eight are certified gold and nine are platinum or multi-platinum. In total, he sold over 20 million certified records worldwide, placing him among the world's best-selling music artists.
In addition to two Grammy Award nominations, Buffett will be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Excellence category this October.
'Sunny Afternoon' is the 9th track from his eighteenth studio album, 'Fruitcakes', released in May of 1994.

VS

SEXY SADIE

Sexy Sadie (formerly L.A.) was a Spanish pop rock group from the island of Majorca. The group, which sang in English, released five full albums, plus one album of cover songs, one of rare tracks, and one of remixes.

The band formed in 1992 and their name was inspired by The Beatles' song 'Sexy Sadie'. The group broke up in 2006. 'Sunny Afternoon' is the 8th track from their 2002 album 'Dream Covers'.

  1. Happy summer, Debbie!

This is a great song choice for the season. I was going to vote for Jimmy Buffett, but in the end, Sexy Sadie won me over with their fun rendition. My vote goes to Sexy Sadie - and now I must be off to listen to more of their tunes. Thanks for the introduction!

    1. Thanks Mary! I hope you have a happy summer as well. ☺ Too bad Sexy Sadie has retired, eh? First vote goes to the Spanish rockers!

  2. I liked Jimmy Buffett's version from the get-go and still liked it better after hearing Sexy Sadie's, so one for Buffett.

  3. Sexy Sadie gets my vote. They've got a uniquely cool sound which is perfect for this classic Kinks tune. Jimmy Buffett, IMO, really didn't carry this off well; not a good sound for him. ~ Nancy

  4. DEBBIE ~

Hey, really neat illustration of you and the dog celebrating the arrival of flip-flop season. (When I was a kid in Southern California, those were called thongs. Funny how words can change meaning so drastically.)

I did NOT know that Jimmy Buffett had recorded a version of this Kinks song. And, ordinarily, I'm not really a big fan of his. 'Margaritaville', sure; but not much else. However, I was surprised to realize how ideal this song was for that persona or lifestyle that he always seemed to endorse. Just kickin' back in the sun with a drink and... don't sweat the rest. Whenever I think of Jimmy Buffett, I'm always reminded of an early-'80s weekend trip I took to Catalina Island with a couple of friends. As usual, everything turned into an upside-down misadventure... but the daiquiris were good!

I gotta vote for Buffett and that laid-back sound.

Judge Al Bondigas was eating pizza in the living room while I was playing these songs and so I asked for his input (uh... rulin', I meant to say). And he said, "This may shock you, but I'm rulin' for Sexy Sadie. I think it sounds more like the Kinks original, and that's a good thing."

Hmmm.... I don't know. Sexy Sadie didn't sound too "Lazying on a sunny afternoon" to me, but to each their rulin'.

    1 for Parrot-Head and
    1 for Sadie of Majorca

    1. Glad you liked my little cartoon, Stephen. ☺ And yes, I remember flip flops were called 'thongs' back in the day. Now, 'thong' refers to horribly uncomfortable underwear that resembles dental floss. Buffett did have a unique style and who doesn't like 'Margaritaville'? Thanks for your vote and also Judge Al's rulin'. Can't say I see the resemblance between the Kinks and Sexy Sadie either, though. That's one for Buffett and one for Sadie. Happy trails!

  5. Hi Debbie! Wishing you a summer full of yellow butterflies! This was a great matchup but I'd likely vote for Jimmy Buffett in whatever contest he was in (a hangover or, rather HOLDover from all those beach vacations in Mexico ;-) so, Jimmy for me, please.

  6. Debbie,

Like Stephen, I'm not much of Jimmy Buffet fan but honestly his laid back style was perfect for this song and that's why I'm giving my vote to him! Enjoy your Summer Afternoons, mornings, and nights! :)

  8. Sorry it took me so long to get to this- Sunday was busy, and I was senile the rest of the week until this morning! I gotta say, Jimmy was Jimmy, and that's a good thing. As for the other guys, disjointed works for me only occasionally- not here though. Telling tales of Parrotheads for me!
